Impossibile parlare di Oblivion senza citare i capostipiti della saga. Il primo vero successo della (allora) appena nataBethesda Softworks (software house che prende il nome dalla omonima città del Maryland) fu senza ombra di dubbio The Elder Scrolls: Arena. Uscito nel lontano 1992, l'obiettivo di questo primo capitolo della saga era quello di riuscire a portare sullo schermo le esperienze tipiche degli RPG cartacei. Il risultato fu certamente di ottimo livello e l'obiettivo fu quasi raggiunto. Il problema principale di Arena, tuttavia, era quello della quasi totale assenza di una quest o di una trama principale: questa totale mancanza alla lunga finiva per annoiare il giocatore.
Il secondo capitolo della saga, Daggerfall, cercò di colmare i punti deboli del primo capitolo, iniziarono a comparire degli abbozzi di trama ed un filo conduttore nelle varie quest che si affrontavano durante il gioco. Alcune trovate interessanti, come il generatore casuale di dungeon, riuscirono a far diventare questo gioco un vero e proprio cult tra i videogiocatori.
Proprio come Oblivion rappresenta essenzialmente un evoluzione diMorrowind, cosi Daggerfall iniziò anche esso a porre le basi di quello che sarebbe stato Morrowindqualche anno più tardi.
Uscito nel non troppo lontano 2002, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind rappresentò una vera e propria rivoluzione per il genere RPG, mai si era vista in un RPG una così ampia libertà di esplorazione. Per la prima volta in un episodio della saga "The Elder Scrolls" vi era inoltre la presenza di una trama principale e di un filo conduttore tra le varie quest, che contribuiva a rendere il tutto più interessante. Ovviamente, pur nella sua immensa magnificenza, neanche Morrowind era esente dai difetti e la pecca principale del gioco rimaneva la scarsa intelligenza degli NPC.
Questa lunga introduzione per spiegare essenzialmente cosa è e cosa rappresenta questo quarto capitolo della mai troppo lodata serie targata Bethesda Softworks. Oblivion è, essenzialmente, una naturale evoluzione della saga, che punta ad ampliare ed a rifinire ciò che è stato Morrowind. Grafica alle stelle, ambienti ancora più vasti, grande giocabilità, musiche epiche e finalmente NPC che sembrano davvero persone reali che vivono una propria vita.
